John L. Huyck

John L. Huyck, age 98, went home to his Lord peacefully Aug. 20, 2023 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, Fla. John was born in Walton March 19, 1925, to Frank L. and Winnifred (Spoonhower) Huyck. He graduated from Walton High School class of 1942. He obtained a bachelor of arts from Hartwick and a bachelor of music from the University of Arizona, a master of music at Syracuse and a voice certificate from the American School of Fine Arts at Fontainbleau, France.

After ten years of college teaching and three years in the public school system, he retired to Walton and opened his own private studio teaching voice and piano.

Throughout his teaching career he was most active in the performing area as a singer, performing recitals, opera, oratorios, and solo stints with orchestra and much work both as a soloist and choir director. He also served eleven years as a voice instructor at NYS Music Camp, which was held summers at Hartwick College.

In 1987 he retired to pursue a life of pure joy traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada, Europe and Asia. He moved to Miami Beach, Fla., in 1992.

He was also a former member of the Holland Society of New York.

He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Frank William Huyck and Marvin Huyck MD, and three sisters, Alice Davis, Pauline Dicks and Frances Finch.

He is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins, and close friends Kenneth Sternweis, Mike and Natalie Hannau, and Joann O’Neill all of Miami Beach, Fla., and close personal friend and caregiver, Colleen MacRabie.

A special thank you to his friends Ken and Mike for all the support they gave to John, notwithstanding the many trips to appointments. 

Services for John will be held at a date and time to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John L. Huyck’s memory may be made to Hospice, or American Heart Association.
