Darryl Houck, 67, of Downsville, passed away in the company of his family on April 26, 2024.

Darryl is survived by his children Jamie (Crystal) Houck of Downsville, and Ryan (Sheri) Houck, of Hamilton; his grandchildren Kayla, Travis, Brody and Ryan Jr.; his siblings Dan (Gloria Houck) of Walton, and George Houck of Downsville, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ray Stanley and Jackie Houck of Downsville, siblings Gerald Houck, Stan Houck and Loana Markert, and love of his life, Vicki Houck.

Later in life, Darryl also appreciated the company of Michelle Massaro and her family.

Darryl was born on May 22, 1956 to Jackie and Ray Stanley Houck. He graduated from Downsville Central School in 1975. Darryl went on his first date with Vicki Houck in high school, accompanying her to the Walton Fair. They were high school sweethearts who married Oct. 23, 1976. Together they lived in Maine, Virginia and Pennsylvania before returning to their hometown of Downsville in the summer of 1991 as owners of the Catskill Mountain Kampground.

Upon graduating high school, Darryl enrolled in the U.S. Navy where he proudly served, ascending to a position working on the elite Classic Wizard project in Winter Harbor, Maine. After his honorable discharge, Darryl worked in the private defense industry in both Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Darryl was an avid golfer who could often be found on the links with either his family or friends on most days in the summer. He greatly enjoyed the peace and solitude of working alone in the stone quarry where he would commune with God and nature. Darryl found great pleasure in helping others, especially when it was done anonymously or unasked. He was active in local politics and served on the town board for many years. By all accounts, Darryl was a very good man, who leaves behind a legacy of compassion and generosity.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 4 at 2 p.m. at the Colchester Community United Methodist Church, Downsville. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Colchester Community United Methodist Church, P.O Box 305, Downsville, NY 13755.
