Hobart Rotary talks public transportation system Sept. 10

Posted

It’s not unusual to see Hobart residents walking three miles to Stamford up the rail trail or along Route 10 to do their weekly shopping at Tops because they have no car and Hobart has no grocery store. Likewise our neighbors often find themselves in the uncomfortable position of asking others to give them a ride to Delhi to attend necessary appointments or even hitchhiking down the highway.

It’s no secret that all of Delaware County has a major problem with the lack of any public transportation, hampering residents’ ability to travel to work and take care of everyday needs, Rotarian Mary van Valkenburg said. This is a good time to consider options that could make a big improvement in the lives of many residents.

Taking the steps to create a public transportation system for Delaware County will be the topic for discussion at the Tuesday, Sept. 10 meeting of the Hobart Rotary Club.

Ray Pucci, Delaware County Chamber of Commerce president, will present the findings and recommendations of a public transportation study the chamber conducted in 2023. Access to transportation remains a huge hurdle for access to healthcare, employment, and education, according to Pucci. The report was submitted to county officials for action.

The Hobart Rotary Club meets at 6 p.m. in the Hobart Community Center at 80 Cornell Avenue. Everyone is invited to attend.
