For family farmers, the future of the land is as important as the crops it yields. Yet, many farmers delay the difficult conversations about succession, risking the stability of their operations.
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County will host a free workshop at its Hamden office (34570 State Highway 10) Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 2 - 4:30 p.m., to help farmers navigate the transition of their businesses to the next generation.
Led by Desiree Keever of CCE Delaware County and Serena Orleski of the Watershed Agricultural Council’s Easement Program, the interactive session will guide participants through the financial and legal aspects of farm succession. Topics will include evaluating farm assets, understanding transfer tools, and compiling essential documents for a smooth transition. Attendees will receive a workbook and refreshments at no cost.
Farmers are encouraged to register by Feb. 24. Calling Kim Holden at 607-865-7090 or email her at kmh19@cornell.edu
For those tending not just to fields but to legacies, the session offers a crucial first step in ensuring that their hard-earned work continues to thrive in the hands of future stewards.
