Peter Stoop, 93, of Sidney, passed away on Monday, May 1, 2023 at his home.

Peter was born on Sept. 21, 1929 in Stickney, S.D. to Dutch immigrant parents, Peter and Johanna (Van de Engle) Stoop of Rotterdam, Holland. Pete was always thankful that his parents came to this country to give their children a better opportunity.

In 1932, the family moved from South Dakota to DeLancey, where he grew up on the family farm on Bagley Brook. One of the more enjoyable memories of his days on the family farm was when he helped his father and brothers build a small lake on the back part of the farm, later known as Tanglewood Lake. Later on when he had a young family of his own, they spent a lot of the summers in their camper at that lake.

He graduated from Delhi high school and SUNY Canton. Pete served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was on the DMZ line the day the war ended in July 1953. On Oct. 13, 1956, Peter married Marga Strang in Sidney, where they started and raised their family, daughter, Laurie S. and son, Peter T.  In 1954, he began a career in engineering at Bendix in Sidney.  He also worked for Bendix in Dallas for 4 years and in Washington D.C. for 2 years.  He always enjoyed traveling and doing business with Bendix’s many customers from around the world.  He retired from the company in 1988 as Director of Marketing.

Pete was a longtime, dedicated member of the First Congregational Church, Sidney.

Peter is survived by his two children: son Pete T. and Sherri of Orange County, Calif., and daughter Laurie and Ron Williams of Kirkwood; two grandsons, Jeremy and Steffanie Williams and Scott and Diana Williams; great-grandchildren Joshua, Margret Anne, Kaylee, Hailey and Hannah and sister-in-law Hilda Stoop.

In addition to his parents, Pete was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Marga; and four brothers:  Andrew, Cornelius, Lewis and Theodore.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 12, at the Sidney United Methodist Church, 12 Liberty St. Sidney, NY 13838. Burial with military honors will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.
