“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” - Antoine de Saint-Exupery, “The Little Prince.”

We’re excited to bring back our annual Tiny Art Show this month. In January, patrons painted tiny artworks on canvas. Throughout February, these beautiful works of art will be displayed in the library. Be sure to stop to check them out.

If you’re looking for something fun to do this month, consider joining one of our regular programs - there’s something for everyone. We have a weekly game-based group -  Mahjong  - that meets each Thursday evening, and a knit and crochet group that meets Tuesday afternoons. Younger kids will love our weekly Storytime on Fridays.

If you’re looking for some fun activities for your child or teen, we have a monthly Lego club for kids in grades K-5, and a game/chess club for all ages. For teens we have teen makers club and teen book club.

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr. But what Starr does — or does not — say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

Book club discussion: Wednesday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m. on the lower level. Reading this month: “Nightcrawling” by Leila Mottley ©2023. Kiara and her brother Marcus are scraping by in an East Oakland apartment complex optimistically called the Regal-Hi. Both have dropped out of high school, their family fractured by death and prison. But while Marcus clings to his dream of rap stardom, Kiara hunts for work to pay their rent — which has more than doubled — and to keep the nine-year-old boy next door, abandoned by his mother, safe and fed. One night, what begins as a drunken misunderstanding with a stranger turns into the job Kiara never imagined wanting but now desperately needs: nightcrawling. Her world breaks open even further when her name surfaces in an investigation that exposes her as a key witness in a massive scandal within the Oakland Police Department.
