Re: the letter “What Happened to Our Humanity?” The Reporter 8/13/26:
This narrative keeps popping up in letters, articles, and TV panels - all with the same trademarks of unsupported allegations, and extra-legal expectations, amounting to the appearance of deception. It seems as if they’re all reading from the same script. In this instance, for example, a statement suggests there are “immigrants” in detention that “...don’t DESERVE [emphasis mine] to be there because they are [allegedly - clarification mine] legally seeking a path to asylum, and have working papers and SS numbers.” Of course the writer shows no firsthand knowledge of this, yet sets the table.
The instant an alien illegally touches U.S. soil, or overstays his visa, he commits a crime; additionally, staying illegally is also a crime, and he is therefore a criminal subject to removal [325, 326 USC]. This is “due process.” Thereafter, the criminal has legal options of appeal under due process, yet is subject to detention pending adjudication [8 US Code 1231, and 8 US Code 1229]. If they’re in detention, they “deserve” to be there, under the law.
There are “over 200 detention facilities in the U.S.” [Google} processing and having processed hundreds of thousands of detainees [Google, again]. For an individual, even one with documented firsthand knowledge, necessarily of a limited few, to make statements; or to reference undocumented or unreliable sources, is, at a minimum, irresponsible.
There are various “standards” across the several types of facilities. None of the standards are “inhumane,” a highly charged label. Considering the vast numbers of interactions over time [detainees X encounters X hours - a REAL big number of possibilities] there will be lapses. This is the real world, in every aspect. The principal, not the feeling, here is the Rule of Law, and “don’t sacrifice the good for the perfect.” And there are recourses under the law.
My point here, and in all cases, is to argue the supported merits.
Then again, there are hidden agendas....
