Letter to the Editor: The Buck Stops Here

Posted

President Harry Truman had a sign on his White House desk that said, “The Buck Stops here!” I was reminded of that sign when I read, Three Strikes and You’re Out?...  (The Reporter April 13) about the challenges that the Treadwell Water District has been facing for years in getting grants to fix their water problems including outages and lead pipes. Apparently, they have not received two grants because of technical oversights such as missing signatures and critical paperwork.

The town supervisor implied that because the town hired a consulting firm to oversee the process, the town was not responsible for the mishandling of these grant applications.

Sadly, the people of Treadwell have been left with a dysfunctional water system which is owned by the town of Franklin. In applying for a third grant the Franklin Town Board must step up to the plate and take responsibility for overseeing the entire process. Not only does the buck stop with them but they have a duty to serve their community.
