I received an email from Congressman Riley the other day seeking to blame the high cost of electricity and heat on NYSE&G and its foreign owners. I had to ask myself whether he was living in an alternate universe.
The Democrats have been in control of Albany since 2006. Control of the PSC and thus management of utility costs has been in their hands for the last 20 years. Cuomo thought he was going to be president. In order to curry favor with the Green crowd, he pushed through policies that were designed to raise our utility costs to subsidize renewable energy sources and eliminate traditional sources of energy. Fracking was banned, new pipelines to transport natural gas were prohibited, new construction in parts of the state was prohibited from using natural gas as a heating source and nuclear power plants were decommissioned. Solar and wind projects were heavily subsidized by ratepayers. That was Democratic policy. Still is to the best of my knowledge.
So, when you hear the governor and our representatives responsible for these policies attack the utility that is subject to their oversight, you have to wonder what world they are living in. We have seen the enemy and it is us.
