Katharine Morgan

Katharine Morgan died peacefully on Feb. 18 at her home in Franklin. Katharine was a beloved daughter of George and Lorinda Morgan of Walton; a loving mother to Henry Medina; a cherished sister to Lois (Daniel) Cook, Anne (Nick) Kelsh, George (Mary) Morgan, and Rebecca Morgan (Gregory Schnabel); and a devoted aunt to her nine nieces and nephews.

Katharine was born on Feb. 15, 1963 in Warwick. She graduated from Walton Central High School in 1981, where she was the editor of the school newspaper and co-founded the Model U.N. Chapter in Walton. She attended the University of Chicago, where she studied English literature and met her first husband, Dan Medina. Dan and Katharine enjoyed their early years together in Chicago, New York City, Tokyo, and London, where their son, Henry, was born. Katharine worked in publishing for Billboard Publications and Tokyo Time Out.

While Katharine loved the adventure and cuisine of international travel, her favorite place was always the ocean. She loved to entertain both in her Ansonia apartment and at her Amagansett beach homes, which were always open to friends and family, and where food, music and laughter were abundant. For many years she was steadfastly committed to her daily run, regardless of schedule or weather, and she enjoyed training for and completing the New York Marathon in 1988.

Katharine met Robert Sloss in New York City. They resettled in Franklin, where they were married and jointly managed George and Linda’s final small herd of Holstein heifers. She wrote for local newspapers and volunteered at the Franklin Library. Katharine and Bob were happiest in the comfort of their home or in Rhode Island where they shared their passion for the ocean. Bob predeceased Katharine by three years.

Katharine had a huge heart, a shining spirit, sharp humor and endless energy. She was an avid reader, a stunning writer, a generous host, and a fan of cooking shows. She loved to talk about books, politics, food, movies, rolling out a long list of curated recommendations to everyone from her 12 year old nephew to her 82 year old mother.

She cared deeply for her family, loved intensely, and was extremely generous and supportive of those she loved. Her perception and relentless sense of humor were legendary, commanding a room during good times, and bringing levity to the tough ones. She was a vibrant and magnetic person, adored by a large and loving circle of friends and family. Her pride in her son Henry was immeasurable.

Katharine was so loved and will be dearly missed.
