James Arthur Backus Sr., 76, of Trout Creek, passed away Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023 at home, surrounded by his loving family.

James was born March 6, 1947 in Cannonsville, the son of the late Leon and Alice (Brundege) Backus. He married the former Nancy Scott June 17, 1970.

Jim owned and operated the family dairy for 53 years. Through his dedication and hard work, he taught his children and grandchildren invaluable life lessons. The farm was a gathering place for many to come and visit. This helped create lasting friendships. He was a founding member and current president of the Cannonsville Farmers Rod and Gun Club.

James is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Nancy. Together they had four children that he thought the world of: Brian (Stephanie) Backus of Trout Creek, Stacie (Daniel) Sovocool of Trout Creek, James Jr. (Jaime) Backus of Trout Creek and Roberta (Brian Palmatier) Backus of Walton. He was very proud of his seven grandchildren - Jordynn and Tyler Palmatier, Kaleb and Noah Sovocool, Damian and Mackenzie Backus, and Brynne Backus. He cherished his family and enjoyed every moment spent with them.

He is survived by his loving sisters, Rosemary VanValkenburg of Walton, Janet Johnston of Deposit, and Marion and Victor Cower of Harpursville, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, his beloved granddaughter Brianna Backus, brothers Edward, Lloyd, Andrew and Robert Backus, and his sisters Jayne Tomao, Marjory Muller, and Ruth Faulkner.

Family and friends are invited to call Friday, Sept. 29, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton. A graveside service will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. at Walton Cemetery, 55 Fancher Avenue, Walton.
