Gary F. Wilbur, 81, of Kirkwood, passed away at home Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023 after a long illness.

Gary was born April 4, 1942 in Suffern to the late Merton H. and Virginia (Towle) Wilbur. In 1960 he graduated from Downsville High School, DownsvilleY. He then went on to get his architectural degree from Architectural Institute, Williamsport, Penn.

On June 20, 1971 Gary married the love of his life, Kathleen Mahoney, at St John’s the Baptist Church, Walton. They enjoyed an amazing life participating in the Sports Car Club of America – Southern Tier Region, working races at Watkins Glen Int’l, were members of the Corvette Club of America and rescued many cats, dogs and horses. Sadly, Kathy passed away Feb. 19, 1994.

For over 25 years he worked as an architectural draftsman for Broome County Parks & Recreation in Binghamton. He was an avid collector of American Flyer trains, Civil War memorabilia and model Corvettes, among other hobbies. He also did detailed painting of miniature military figures.

Gary was a huge fan of NASCAR, Dale Earnhardt his favorite driver. Faithfully followed Corvette Racing team in IMSA and the New York Giants, his favorite football team.

Gary is survived by his loving half-sister, Patricia Lydon (Michael Derarakelian), niece Caroline Lydon and nephew Eamonn Lydon of Delmar, dear friend Sally and friend and caregiver Jim. He was predeceased by his parents, wife Kathleen Wilbur, sister Lynne Wilbur and nephew Timothy Wilbur.

Special thank you to Jim, Gary’s friend and caregiver whose amazing concern, support and friendship allowed Gary to stay at home these last several years. He spoke very highly of you, and often.

To Sally, Gary’s dear friend for many years, thank you for always being there and caring about him. He always spoke kindly of you and your family.

And to Courtney Funeral Home, thank you to Jeannine, Kurt and Natasha for their kindness, support and patience during this time. Much appreciated.

A graveside service was held Friday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m. at Walton Cemetery, 55 Fancher Ave, Walton. The family is being cared for by Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.
