Charles (“Charlie”) W. Sommers Jr., a longtime resident of Harpersfield, bid farewell on Jan. 12, 2024, at the age of 83.

Born on Nov. 11, 1940, Charlie grew up in the suburbs of New York City but chose to settle down amid the peaceful peaks and valleys of the gorgeous Catskill Mountains of central New York state.

Graduating from Amherst College in 1963, where he notably captained the basketball team, Charlie continued his academic journey at New York University School of Law where he earned a law degree. His unending passion for knowledge was evidenced by his fascination with U.S. Naval history, and local New York history as well as his impressive ability to recite classic poetry and literature from memory.

For decades, Charles dedicated himself to helping others battle substance abuse, serving as a drug and alcohol abuse counselor for the state of New York.

His zest for life extended beyond his work, finding joy in hunting, reading, the art of cooking, and immersing himself in nature. The epitome of a perfect day for Charles involved a scenic drive through the countryside with his beloved Dee, engaging in meaningful conversations with anyone willing to share.

Charles, predeceased by his parents, Charles and Evelyn, is survived by his cherished wife Denise, his sister Eva, his daughter Laurie, and his two sons Charles and Steven. He also leaves behind three beloved grandchildren: Caroline, Kai, and Zack.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at MacArthur Funeral Home, 15 Buntline Drive, Stamford, during calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Friday, Jan. 19, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

His memory will forever reside in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known and loved him.
