Most hunters are aware that New York State has regulations on what type of hunting implements can be used to hunt certain game in certain areas. It is the hunter’s responsibility to do the research required to ensure that they will be following all local, state, and federal regulations when they go hunting in any given location. This means that each time you go out to hunt on a piece of land that’s new to you, some research may be required. DEC has provided some guidance to help with this on the Deer and Bear Hunting Regulations webpage. This page presents a map (pictured above) of New York showing what implements can be used in what areas. We also recommend following these basic guidelines:
• When given permission to hunt on private land, always confirm with the landowner that they approve of the use of the implement(s) you plan to utilize.
• Be aware that certain state lands may have restrictions, always check the DEC website, or call a Forest Ranger.
• Not all public land is state land; know who owns the land you’re hunting on and contact the correct entity for permission and information on regulations.
