Volunteers at Elijah’s Closet Thrift Store, a mission of Walton’s First Congregational Church, donated the proceeds from sales on Oct. 18 and 19 to residents in western North Carolina recovering from Hurricane Helene. With the assistance of the community, $1,500 was raised. Reaching out to Gossett’s Nursery in High Point, North Carolina, to see what was needed, they were informed that small kitchen appliances would be most appreciated. Forty-three small appliances - crockpots, toasters, coffee makers, etc. - were purchased and shipped to Newland, North Carolina, Oct. 31. Newland, a town in Avery County, has less than 1,000 residents and saw 15 inches of rain during the storm.
