Unadilla’s Library: Three Saturdays of Small-Town Rituals

Posted

UNADILLA — In a village where the pace of a weekend morning can still be set by a conversation, the Unadilla Public Library is marking the month of May with a trio of gatherings that lean into the quiet work of community.

On Saturday, May 9, at 11 a.m., the library will host its “Sit-n-Stitch,” an open session for knitters and crocheters to bring their projects and, just as importantly, their questions. Beginners are welcome; a volunteer, Gloria C., will be available to guide newcomers, with yarn and needles provided. The tone is informal — part workshop, part social hour — where patterns are shared alongside conversation.

The following Saturday, May 16, also at 11 a.m., the tables will be cleared for a family game day, led by Dorene Ireland in partnership with the Family Resource Network. The event, free to attend, offers snacks and a modest incentive: a $5 gift card for each participant to the House of Consignment. The larger aim, organizers suggest, is simpler — to provide a place for families to gather and spend time together.

On May 23, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the library turns to its shelves, hosting a book sale that reflects both practicality and access. Children’s books will be offered on a buy-one-get-one basis, while adult paperbacks are priced at 25 cents, with select hardcover fiction, nonfiction, DVDs and CDs available for $1 or less.

Individually modest, the events collectively underscore a role the library continues to play — not only as a place to borrow books, but as a space where skills are passed along, families gather, and the rhythms of a small town are quietly sustained.
