DOWNSVILLE - Downsville Central School marked Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 10, with a student-led ceremony that blended music, remembrance and a pledge to live up to the example of service.
Welcoming guests, students addressed the veterans directly: “Each year to honor you and show you just how grateful we are for everything you’ve done to protect our freedom...it never feels like enough, but please know we sincerely appreciate you… we’re so honored to have you all here today.”
The program opened with reflections and readings on service and sacrifice - “On Veterans Day, we honor all who answered to a service call, soldiers young, soldiers old, fought for freedom, brave and bold” - and moved into a series of student tributes about gratitude in action. “Veterans are people who know what it means to put others first,” one student said, noting the lessons “to go through hard work, never give up and stand together even when things get tough.”
Speakers urged classmates to repay that debt by how they live.
“That means showing respect for others, helping people in need, standing up for what’s right, and being good citizens in our schools and communities.” They reminded the audience that everyday rituals carry deeper meaning: “When we say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning or see our flag waving in the wind… behind those symbols are millions of brave people - veterans who make sure we can go to school, play outside and speak freely.”
Students also asked their peers to “remember that freedom isn’t free,” and that “courage comes in many forms, not just in battle, but in hearts that choose to serve.” They closed their remarks with a collective salute: “To all the veterans here with us, we see you, we honor you, and we are grateful for you… we promise to keep learning, growing and working hard to make this country worthy of your service. Happy Veterans Day and thank you for everything you’ve done.”
Music anchored the morning. The school chorus led “God Bless America,” younger grades signed “I Love America,” and the high school band performed selections in honor of each branch, drawing sustained applause from veterans and families.
As the assembly ended, the message was as clear as the final note: gratitude, expressed not only in “two small words” - thank you - but in the daily work of citizenship that students vowed to carry forward.
