Have you ever had a niece, nephew, or grandchild stay over for a weekend? You spoil them, share special moments, and send them home with memories that last a lifetime. Now, imagine doing the same — but for a rescue dog.
Fostering animals is a lot like hosting a child for a short stay. It’s temporary, it’s meaningful, and yes, it tugs at your heartstrings. Many people say, “I could never foster — I’d want to keep them all.” But after fostering 21 dogs, “I can tell you the magic isn’t in keeping them; it’s in helping them on their journey to a forever home.”
Some of my fosters have stayed for a few days, others for months. Each one learned house manners, leash skills, and how to be a beloved companion. And while letting go is never easy, knowing they’re going to a family who will cherish them makes every goodbye worth it.
One family I knew had a summer home but couldn’t have a dog in their city apartment. So, every Friday, they’d pick up the same dog from the shelter and return her Sunday afternoon. Week after week, the pup enjoyed a mini-vacation, learning what it meant to be part of a home. By the time she was adopted, she was fully prepared to be someone’s best friend.
Studies show that even one night away from a shelter reduces a dog’s stress. That means fostering — even just for a weekend — can make a life changing difference. I may not have been able to adopt 21 dogs, but I gave them a stepping stone to happiness. And there’s always another pup waiting for their next “sleepover.”
So, if you’ve ever thought about fostering but hesitated, consider this: you don’t have to keep them forever. You just have to love them for now.
