ALBANY — New Yorkers of all ages are being encouraged to look up this spring as the 2026 I BIRD NY Challenge begins on March 1. The program invites participants to identify at least 10 wild bird species across the state, from backyard parks to DEC-managed lands, earning a commemorative patch, certificate, and the chance to win birding prizes.
The challenge highlights the state’s more than 450 bird species, from coastal shorebirds to forest and wetland dwellers. Participants can explore local parks, trails, and the New York State Birding Trail to complete the challenge, which runs through November 1.
Advocates say the program makes birding accessible. Photos documenting sightings can earn extra entries in prize drawings, and forms are available online in several languages. In 2025, more than 1,600 people participated.
Officials also cautioned about avian influenza and encouraged safe, responsible wildlife observation. Participants are urged to follow Leave No Trace principles while enjoying outdoor spaces.
