WATERVILLE, ME - The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team saw their season end Tuesday, May 9, dropping a pair of games to host Eagles of Husson University at the 2023 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship Tournament with scores of 16-6 and 4-1. With the losses the Fighting Tigers close the campaign at 22-15 while Husson claims their third consecutive conference title and the league’s NCAA Championship Tournament Bid with a 24-17 record.

In the opener Husson rocked the Fighting Tiger pitching staff and took advantage of a pair of errors for eight runs in the opening two innings to take an early 8-0 lead and held a 9-2 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth when Cobleskill struck for three runs highlighted by two run single that made it 9-5 heading into the seventh. However, the home team would answer with six runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 15-5 and effectively decide the issue and force a winner-take-all scenario second game.

At the plate junior first baseman Chris Champlin, a graduate of South Kortright Central School, went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. In the nightcap the Fighting Tigers struck first in the top of the sixth inning when Champlin singled home shortstop David Flora from third to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Cobleskill lead did not last long as in the bottom of the seventh the game tied 1-1.

The Fighting Tiger ace could not stem the tide and Husson responded by picking up three runs in the frame to take 4-1 lead to cement the victory and the league title.

Champion was 1-for-3 with the team’s lone RBI.
