The public is invited to Sidney’s annual Arbor Day celebration sponsored and hosted by the village of Sidney Shade Tree Commission, Friday, April 28 at the pavilion in Keith Clark Park beginning at 10 a.m. The Shade Tree Commission regulates the planting, maintenance and removal of trees in the public streets, parks and other municipally owned property in the village of Sidney.
A performance by the Sidney Elementary School band under the direction of Brandon Hilebrant will start the event, followed by a welcome by Shade Tree Commission Chairperson Lorrie Roach.
Forester Nick Shaw from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will talk about his work to protect the trees and forests of New York. He works with the Shade Tree Commission to educate our community to understand and appreciate the benefit of trees and to fulfill the standards for the honor of a Tree City recognition.
The Arbor Day tree will be dedicated to Mary Jane Plummer for her contributions to the Sidney community. An active gardener, Mary Jane has served as treasurer, vice president and president over several terms for Sidney’s Hill & Valley Garden Club. Plummer has selected a ‘Bloodgood’ red Japanese maple which will be planted on the Sidney Public Library grounds.
Additionally, Sidney’s fifth grade students will display their artwork depicting the Arbor Day theme ‘All Things Trees Give Us.”
To close the celebration, the Delaware County Soil and Water Conservation District has provided oak and black cherry saplings to be distributed to those attending while the supply lasts.
