DELHI - Democrat Pat Ryan of Ulster County narrowly won the Aug. 23 special election to fill the vacant seat in New York’s 19th Congressional District with 51% of the vote over Republican Marc Molinaro of Dutchess County.

Despite the win, Delaware County overwhelmingly voted for Molinaro by a margin of 4,287 to 3,033 votes.

Democrat Josh Riley was the victor in the Democratic primary over challenger Jaime Cheney with a district-wide margin of approximately 60%, according to the Associated Press.

Riley outperformed Cheney in every county in the district, including Delaware County, with a tally of 1,496 to 1,032. Riley will face off against Molinaro in November’s general election for a four year term.

Incumbent Republican Peter Oberacker won a tight contest in the Republican primary for the 51st Senate District, against challenger Terry Bernardo. Oberacker captured 52% of the vote.

The 51st senate district was redrawn earlier this year, following updated Census data, to include all of Delaware County. Oberacker will face Democratic challenger Eric Ball in November’s general election.
