ROXBURY — The Roxbury Arts Group has awarded three projects through its 2026 Smart Energy Art Grant program, supporting public art initiatives that explore clean energy, environmental stewardship and community engagement across Delaware County.

The grant program, funded through Smart Energy Choices, encourages artists and community organizations to create work centered on the theme “Our Common Clean Energy Future,” with the goal of increasing awareness of clean energy programs and encouraging residents to reduce energy use and carbon emissions.

The 2026 grant recipients are:

Kinetic Commons

The Pakatakan Farmers Market, in partnership with local artist Mika Taga, will create a kinetic sculpture constructed from reclaimed wood and salvaged metal. Designed to move with the wind, the installation will highlight how individual actions can contribute to broader environmental change.

The sculpture will be installed at the Round Barn, where a public unveiling is planned for Saturday, Sept. 19.

Arkville Community Mural

The Arkville Caboose Building, 43263 state Route 28 along the Catskills Scenic Byway, will become home to a new community mural by artist Joanna Murphy. The project replaces Murphy’s original Arkville mural, which cannot be preserved because of ongoing construction.

Inspired by the theme “Our Common Clean Energy Future,” the mural will depict rural resilience, renewable energy, environmental stewardship and the changing future of Catskills communities. Organizers plan to once again involve local students and community volunteers in its creation.

A public unveiling is scheduled for fall 2026.

EcoAction Cards

Artist Kathleen Sweeney will produce “All Hands on Deck!”, an interactive deck of EcoAction Cards developed in collaboration with 12 eco-artists. The project is intended to provide creative, step-by-step ideas for climate action through art and everyday practices.

The card deck will debut during a free public launch from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at 1053 Gallery in Fleischmanns. Participating artists will discuss the project during a public presentation.

The Roxbury Arts Group said the grants are intended to support new artistic work while fostering community conversations about sustainability and the role of renewable energy in the Catskills. More information is available through the Roxbury Arts Group.
