Robert E. Stanczyk, 75, of Downsville passed away Sunday, June 11, 2023 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, following a long illness.

Bob was born July 17, 1947 in Brooklyn, the son of the late Edward and Leocadia (Lechtanski) Stanczyk and moved with his family to Middle Village, Queens, where he spent his teenage years. He was vice president of Club LeMans, a local car club, until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1967. Bob was stationed in Oceana, Va., with VA-35 working in supply, then went on a Westpac Cruise with VA-35 aboard the USS Coral Sea to Vietnam from 1969-1970. After being discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1971 he went to work for United States Postal Service.

Bob met his wife Maryann online in 2000. It was love at first click. On May 22, 2004 they got married in Queens. In March 2006 they moved to Downsville. Bob went to work for Delaware Academy in Delhi, and later at CADI at SUNY, and finally retired from Mountainside Residential Care in Margaretville in 2019. Bob was briefly Adjutant for the James S. Moore American Legion Post #167 in Downsville. Bob was very involved in the Legion Post. He was guest speaker for several Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day Ceremonies. Bob was Delaware County Chaplin for five years and Post 167 Chaplin for many years.

Bob is survived by his loving family, his wife, Maryann, Aunt Eleanor Jaworski, Aunt Terry, cousins Denise Romeika (Jim), Christopher Jaworski (Donna), Samantha, Jillian, Daniel, Glen, Lorraine Gangone (John), Gabriella, Nicholas and Gianna.

Family and friends are invited to call Thursday, June 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Friday, June 16, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 25 Benton Avenue, Walton, with Rev. Edward Golding, Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Paige Cemetery, Downsville.

All are invited following the service to the James S. Moore American Legion Post 167 for a luncheon.
