Resilient Sidney: Open House May 26

Posted

The village of Sidney will host an open house on Thursday, May 26 at village hall 21 Liberty Street, Sidney, from 4 - 7 p.m., to update the Sidney community on a wide range of ongoing ‘Resilient Sidney’ initiatives, including:

• Envisioning Sidney’s resilient riverfront. After a year-long community visioning process funded by The Nature Conservancy, the Village is completing the final strategic plan Envisioning Sidney’s Resilient Riverfront. The Open House is a chance for the public to learn about the projects that emerged from the visioning process and provide input on prioritizing projects.

• Comprehensive plan & zoning update. It’s time for a new comprehensive plan and updated zoning code that will maximize the resilient use and development of the Village’s land and water for an equitable, healthy and livable Village.

• The Sidney Susquehanna greenplain. This climate adaptation initiative (managed retreat) to relocate 100+ families, buy out 140 properties and build upstate NY’s largest green infrastructure ecosystem on the Susquehanna riverfront has entered Phase II and is anticipated to begin construction in Spring 2023.

• The local waterfront revitalization program. A new land and water strategy for Sidney’s Susquehanna riverfront is being developed under a grant provided by New York State Department of State (DOS). Three community events will be planned to seek input and build consensus.

• 4towns4ward. The four communities of Unadilla, Sidney, Bainbridge, and Afton have partnered together to revitalize their collective economic power. The non-profit organization 4Towns4Ward was recently awarded $25K from the Empire State Development (ESD) to develop a strategic planning and feasibility study to identify properties along I-88 and significant community corridors that are ripe for revitalization for commercial use to attract new industry to the area.
