NEW KINGSTON — In a hamlet where traffic slows and neighbors tend to know one another by name, a spring tradition is widening its scope.
On Saturday, May 23, the New Kingston Valley Association will transform Main Street and its surroundings into a daylong gathering that blends commerce, recreation and a measure of neighborly exchange — some of it, notably, without a price tag.
The morning begins at 8 a.m. with a 5K fun run and walk along Thompson Hollow Road, a route chosen as much for its scenery as for its modest challenge. Organizers promise water, snacks and a chorus of encouragement along the way, with small prizes reserved for the first three finishers.
By 10 a.m., attention shifts to the hamlet’s central corridor, where a stretch of Route 6 will fill with a series of lawn sale tables — a patchwork of household goods, curiosities and secondhand finds assembled by residents. A raffle and association merchandise will be offered nearby, along with information on upcoming events.
But the day’s most telling feature may be its simplest: a designated “free-cycle” section at the New Kingston Community Center, housed in the Presbyterian Church, where items are given away outright — a quiet counterpoint to the transactions unfolding just down the road.
There is no rain date.
