During extreme heat, bees carry water droplets back to their hives and fan them with their wings to create a cooling effect—essentially making their own air-conditioning. They also spread water droplets throughout the hive, often placing them in small depressions or empty cells in the honeycomb; as the water evaporates, it cools the surrounding air.
