NAMI of Delaware Otsego offers the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) family to family education classes.
This course is for families and friends of persons who have mental health issues. The course will be held in Oneonta at the First United Methodist Church for eight weeks, Wednesdays at 6 p.m. from April 26 through June 14.
NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization and is dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
NAMI Family-to-Family is for families, significant others, and friends of people with mental health conditions and designated as an evidence-based program to help people have a better understanding of mental health illness, increase coping skills, and empowers people to become advocates for their family members.
The course was written by an experienced family member/ mental health professional and will be taught by NAMI-Delaware Otsego family members who have received intensive training as course instructors.
The course will cover information on conditions such as schizophrenia, mood disorders (bipolar and major depression), anxiety disorder, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The course will give families and friends basic information about medications, crisis coping skills, listening and communication techniques, problem solving and confidentiality challenges, recovery and rehabilitation and self-care tips for families and friends.
The course is designed for parents, siblings, spouses, adult sons and daughters, partners, significant others and friends of persons with mental health conditions.
This course is not for individuals who have a mental health condition.
The NAMI Family to Family course is free; participants must preregister.
