The main house at the historic Arbor Hill estate was constructed by General Ebenezer Foote in 1797 on the site of a land grant from George Washington given for service in the Revolutionary War. The estate was the former residence of Senator John Clarke, and has been owned by the Dent family since the 1950s. The Dent family spent many years hunting and collecting additional period furnishings to compliment this historic estate.
“There just aren’t many estates such as this one left anymore,” said Chuck McIntosh, of the McIntosh Auction Service. “When we first stepped into the house, it was like going back in time to the early 19th century,” he continued.
The furniture and furnishings of the house were either original to the estate or were acquired by the Dent family with careful consideration given to what would have been in the house during that era.
The McIntosh Auction Service staff is proud to have been chosen by the family to sell this estate. Chuck, Roger, and Marty have been working diligently to identify, photograph, and prepare the furniture and furnishings for viewing and auction. The auction will be held at the Arbor hill estate, 1797 Arbor Hill, Back River Road, Delhi, Saturday, Oct. 12 starting at 10 a.m., with preview immediately prior to the auction.
The estate consists of many early pieces of furniture including tables, chairs, cupboards, dressers, stands, and accent pieces, as well as an interesting variety of small and collectible items, some dating back to the late 1700s and early 1800s. This estate will provide people an opportunity to view and purchase a piece of local and early American history.
“We are looking forward to a beautiful Columbus Day fall weekend, and expect a good crowd to take advantage of this unique and historic auction,” said McIntosh. “Selling an estate such as this right on-site, locally, is very important to us,” he continued.
An auction such as this one is unique, and there has been a lot of interest both locally, regionally, and nationally. A complete listing and many photographs can be found at www.mcintoshauction.com or www.auctionzip.com auctioneer #18080.
