Maple Weekend Returns in Bovina Center

At Maplewood Farm & Orchard, maple season is underway

BOVINA CENTER - Duane and Karen LaFever report that trees have been tapped and sap lines are flowing, with main lines now connected to the sugar house. A heavy snowpack made work in the sugar bush more difficult this earlier this year, but preparations are complete.

Production, as always, depends on the weather.

“It’s up to Mother Nature to give us warm days and cool nights, just below freezing, to have the sap run,” Karen LaFever said.

This year, the family expects to produce 600 to 800 gallons of syrup.

The public is invited for Maple Weekend on March 28 and 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring syrup-making demonstrations, maple sugar production, tastings and tours of the sugar bush. The farm store offers maple products and local goods.

The farm will also reopen for apple season weekends from Sept. 12 through Oct. 12, with cider pressing, hayrides and other family activities.
