MARGARETVILLE — Multidisciplinary artist Beth Caspar will present a new body of work exploring the relationship between light, form and shadow in an exhibition opening July 3 at ArtUp gallery in Margaretville.
Titled “Balancing Act: Light, Plane, Shadow,” the exhibition will run through July 26 at the gallery, located at 746 Main St., Binnekill Square. An opening reception will be held July 10 from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by an artist’s talk on July 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. The gallery is open Fridays through Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
For more than three decades, Caspar’s work has examined shape, pattern and color, drawing inspiration from chance arrangements and, more recently, the structure of the alphabet. Her latest exhibition brings together constructions, large-scale works on paper and paintings on panel.
In “Balancing Act,” Caspar turns her attention to the interplay between light and shadow, using materials including graphite on Kraft paper and cut aluminum flashing to create shifting forms.
The exhibition reflects Caspar’s interest in creating a sense of movement and tension, where geometric structures appear both carefully composed and slightly unsettled.
Caspar earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in printmaking from the University of Florida. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in collections including the Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, the New York Public Library and the D’Arcy Thompson Museum in Dundee, Scotland.
Caspar divides her time between her studio in the Catskills and New York City, where she continues to develop work focused on the relationship between structure, perception and visual balance.
