Letter to the Editor: Beyond the Attack Ads: A Call for Real Answers

Posted

As a long-time political junkie, I am appalled at the quality of ads being put out by the candidates for the 19th Congressional District. Each candidate blaming the other for high utility costs is so patently untrue. Neither is to blame. We all know who to blame for high utility costs. Democrats have been in control of Albany for 20 years. At least since Andrew Cuomo’s reign, the goal of the Democrats has been to mollify the Green crowd by adopting policies promoting renewables and discouraging nuclear and natural gas. They have decommissioned nuclear plants, prevented pipelines from bringing in cheap natural gas and outlawed the use of gas in new construction. Moreover, they have mandated that we ratepayers subsidize the implementation of renewables. That all comes at a cost. They should be proud to run on their record of promoting green energy to combat global warning. Instead, they want to blame high energy costs on out of power Republicans and their candidates. Now that is chutzpah, as we say.

And now we have an ad and a post on X blaming one of the candidates for high food and meat prices because he worked at one time for an agricultural products company and a family meat market. How ridiculous is that? And yet I hear nothing about fixing the problems that plague this country. I expect a serious discussion on curing the debt and deficits, making Social Security solvent and dealing with the serious problem of wealth disparity among the many issues facing the country. Before I cast my ballot, I would like to have some inkling on how our representatives plan on responding to those critical matters.
