Irene Emma Schuman, 80, of Meridale, passed away suddenly on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at her home.
Born on July 8, 1944, in Margaretville, the daughter of the late Randolf and Emma (Hull) George. She grew up on Hubbell Hill.
Irene was married on June 12, 1971 to Thomas Schuman in the Gould Church in Roxbury. The couple relocated and built their home in Meridale, where she built Irene’s Beauty Shop which she operated for over 50 years.
She enjoyed gardening, golfing and being outdoors. Often Irene and Tom would enjoy riding around the countryside on their side-by-side or traveling the county with their camper. In the summer you could find Irene out picking her blueberries. One of Irene’s greatest joys was her family, especially her granddaughter Emma.
Besides her parents, Irene was predeceased by her brother: Glen George.
She is survived by her husbandThomas Schuman of Meridale; daughter Jenny (Victor) Harmyk of Gilbertsville; granddaughter Emma Harmyk of Gilbertsville; brothers Roy (Kathy), Larry, and Lynn (Sue) George all of Margaretville; in-laws Jeanne George of Margaretville, Jane (Larry) Cammer of Oneonta, James (Brooke) Schuman of Lanesville, Steve (Maryellen) Schuman of Roxbury and David (Jenn) Schuman of Florida; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends and relatives are invited to call from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 134 Main Street, Delhi, where a service will be held at noon with the Rev. Richard Dykstra. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Meridale.
