The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) voted on key items including the NYSPHSAA softball championship, and the number of allowable yellow cards for boys soccer at its quarterly meeting of the executive committee on Wednesday, Oct. 19.

NYSPHSAA’s softball championship will be a two-day event, starting June 2023.

In addition to the softball championship, a state cheerleading championship will be established in Oct. 2023.

For boys wrestling, in addition to the National Federation of State High School Association’s weight classes, a NYSPHSAA lower weight class will be introduced for the 2022-2023 season. The same will be applied to girls wrestling, with an additional NYSPHSAA lower weight class starting at 94lbs.

Coaches will also be required to use the track wrestling weigh-in form to enter all weigh-ins for dual meets and tournaments.

A two-year waiver was approved by committee members, which will allow female wrestlers to compete in more than six female-only wrestling tournaments. In addition, a girls-only wrestling invitational was approved to begin in the 2022-2023 school year, and continue into 2023-2024.

A proposal to increase the number of allowable yellow cards in the postseason was defeated by a 5-17 vote, meeting minutes state.

Voting on items in regards to classification cut off numbers for six classes in girls volleyball, softball, and baseball, as well as both boys and girls soccer and basketball will be tabled until Nov. 1, to allow for more time to discuss the cut-off numbers.
