Gary P. Gailes, a successful businessman and loving friend, passed away on Oct. 8, 2025, after a long illness.

Born July 19, 1945 and raised in Canaan, Connecticut, the son of Thomas James and Claire Ruth Donahue Gailes, Gary lived a life of quiet dedication and service; to his family, his friends and his communities.

He was a graduate of American University and a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in Viet Nam specializing in military intelligence. Gary made his home in New York City where he enjoyed a global career as a commodities trader in foods before retiring to Big Indian in the Catskill Mountains.

Gary married Miriam Mahari and after her death in 1992, Gary purchased a historic church building in Big Indian. With Martie Stewart Gailes, whom he married in October of 1995, he turned the church into their forever home.

As a resident of Big Indian for more than 40 years Gary devoted his time and energy to making the community a better place. Friends and family remembered him for his devotion to development of significant non-profit organizations including the Belleayre Conservatory and the Catskill Water Discovery Center. Gary’s eye and penchant for detail, coupled with his calm demeanor and diplomatic skills were instrumental in bringing the Belleayre Resort project from concept to approval.

A lifelong Democrat active in political efforts, Gary understood the importance of great acts and small. Working with Martie, they raised money for causes and worked to beautify the area. As an active Rotarian, Gary championed efforts for young people in the community, working especially to help kids get what they needed to be successful in school.

More than anything though, Gary was first and foremost, a good friend; always available to pitch in and help, to sit and listen without judgement, offering advice only when asked. He offered his love, companionship and steadfast support gently and quietly. His presence will be missed but his spirit will remain with all who were lucky enough to know him.

Gary is survived by his wife, Martie Gailes, brothers Thomas and Robert, by stepdaughter and son-in-law Jenny and Dan Schneider and by grandchildren Caleb, Noah and Amelia. Family and friends gathered for a celebration of his life on Sunday, Oct. 26. His ashes will be dispersed at the convenience of his family.

Those who wish to honor Gary’s legacy may do so by supporting the Gary Gailes Memorial Fund at the Catskill Water Discovery Center. Donations can be made by check, payable to the Catskill Water Discovery Center and noted for the Gary Gailes Memorial Fund and mailed to 699 County Rt. 38, Arkville, NY 12406 or online at: Waterdiscoverycenter.org
