STAMFORD — A block of basswood will become a functional wooden spoon during a hands-on workshop Sept. 12 at the Headwaters Arts Center.
The Roxbury Arts Group will host “From Log to Spoon: Spoon Carving Workshop with Michael McCarthy” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 66 Main St.
The beginner-friendly workshop will introduce participants to green woodworking, a traditional craft that uses freshly cut or minimally dried wood. Participants will use carving axes, knives and curved hook knives to shape a spoon while learning about design, wood grain and safe tool use.
McCarthy will also demonstrate and discuss related woodworking techniques, including sharpening, decorative carving, advanced spoon forms, shrink pots, kuksas, pole-lathe turning and other forms of traditional woodenware.
No previous woodworking experience is required. Tools and materials will be provided, and participants will leave with a finished spoon and the skills to continue carving independently.
Additional tools, materials and basswood spoon blanks will be available for purchase.
The workshop is part of the Roxbury Arts Group’s fall programming at Headwaters Arts Center.
