LIVINGSTON MANOR - The Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum is launching a busy summer season with a series of educational programs, festivals and gatherings celebrating the region’s rich fly-fishing heritage.

The season begins Sunday, July 5, with a presentation by fly-fishing author Mike Valla examining the life and work of Lew Oatman, whose innovative streamer patterns helped shape modern baitfish imitation techniques.

The program, titled Lew Oatman: The Father of the Scientific Approach to Baitfish Patterns, will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the museum. Valla will explore Oatman’s influential fly designs, share historical photographs gathered while researching his book The Founding Flies, and discuss the Catskill tier’s lasting impact on the sport.

The presentation is the first installment in a three-part Classic Fly Tier Series hosted by the museum. A $10 donation is suggested to help offset refreshments, and attendees are encouraged to reserve a seat by emailing office@cffcm.com.

Later this summer, author Mike Supinski will visit the museum on Aug. 22 to sign copies of his newest book, A Fishable Feast. Additional details will be announced.

The museum’s annual Summerfest returns Aug. 1 and 2, bringing together fly-fishing demonstrations, local artisans, food vendors and family-friendly activities. Organizers are seeking additional vendors and volunteers to help staff the event.

One of the season’s signature gatherings, the 32nd Catskill Gathering, is scheduled for Sept. 11-13. The annual event draws bamboo rod enthusiasts from across the country for casting demonstrations, presentations and workshops devoted to the craftsmanship and history of split-cane rods.

This year’s program will feature presentations by Hoagy Carmichael, Per Brandin, Tom Smithwick, Bill Heim and Frank Payne. Payne will also host a “New to Bamboo” session for anglers interested in learning about bamboo rods and rod building. The weekend includes casting events, meals and the annual commemorative T-shirt, with early registration encouraged.
