We are in the last week of August, and the summer is coming to a close. This week we welcome new and returning students to SUNY Delhi. New students move in Thursday, Aug. 24, and returning students over the weekend. We wish them a wonderful and successful academic year.

Community volunteers of the week are the SUNY Delhi students that helped paint the brick building up at the Community Garden on Sheldon Drive. Thank you to Alenis Arias, Romeo Cabreja, Jayleene Colon, Tyana Cooper, A’nyra Davis, Isis Gilliens Jackson, Jaylin Gonzalez, Tatum Heywood, Thomas Kargbo, Savannah Krawiec, Alison Martinez and Victoria Mijares for all the work they did to help out with this project. It is greatly appreciated and the community thanks you for your efforts. More thanks go to Amy Randall for her leadership in this project. It’s wonderful to see students helping in the community they live in.

Annya Walker needs our help. There will be a friends of Annya Golf Tournament Friday, Aug. 25, shotgun start at 5:15 p.m. Annya, daughter of Vivian Walker has had multiple surgeries due to unexplained burst brain aneurysms and needs support with her medical bills. Arm-of-the-Sea Theater presents - A Riparian Rhapsody: How the Forest Sings to the Stream, Saturday, Aug. 26 at 2 p.m. at the West Kortright Center, 49 West Kortright Road, East Meredith. This puppet extravaganza dives into Catskill ecology to reveal intricate interactions between Forest and Stream and lyrically makes the case for protecting streamside buffer zones. Stunning visuals, live music, and a singing bear; Arm-of-the-Sea is an ensemble that fuses visual storytelling with live music in original works of mask and puppet theater. This performance is free. At the West Kortright Center Sunday, Aug. 27 at 1 p.m., there will be a free block printing workshop for kids (and older kids). Attendees will make printing blocks from corrugated cardboard and thin foam sheets. Students will be able to print just about anything they can think of so don’t wear good clothing or shoes, as the paint used will be permanent. We can print on tee shirts if you bring them, or paper and fabric that we supply. Pre-registration is required at westkc.org. Anne Gohorel is an artist, textile designer and educator with a passion for kids and color. She currently works as an art teacher at South Kortright Central School.

The 11th annual Family Farm Day is Saturday, Aug. 26 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The day includes open house events at farms from Schoharie, Otsego and Delaware counties. The next Greater Delhi Area Chamber of Commerce Mixer will be held Tuesday, Aug. 29 from 5-7 p.m. at Strickland Hollow Farm, 9483 NY-28, Meridale. In addition to their bottle shop and tasting room and new eatery on Main Street in Delhi, Jerry and Erica have a working farm where they host events like weddings and produce their own line of distilled spirits. Spend an evening meeting fellow business owners and community supporters on this stunning farm. There will be food provided by a number of local chefs including Ed O’Neill from The Shire, Jonah Shaw from Quarter Moon Cafe, Catskill Smokehouse and Good Cheap Food, and Jerry Pellegrino who has been in the restaurant business for decades and now serves food at the Strickland Hollow Shop Wednesday through Saturday each week. There will be a Strickland Hollow signature cocktail and an open mic in case you feel like performing. These networking events are a chance to make connections and a chance to find out what is going on at the Greater Delhi Area Chamber of Commerce. Mark your calendar to celebrate the opening of Ben Dowell’s solo show “Paranoid Breakfast” at Birdsong Farm Saturday, Sept. 2 from 4 until 7 p.m. The show includes oil paint on canvas, oil paint on cereal boxes, clothing worn by a famous dog, the negative space of a cereal box, drawings, and a bust of Jolly West.
