It’s hard to believe that August starts this week. Here are some holidays and celebrations that take place in August that you may want to celebrate. Thursday, Aug 3 is National Watermelon Day, Sunday, Aug. 6 is National Sisters Day, Sunday, Aug. 13 is National Lefthanders Day, and National Women’s Equality Day is Saturday, Aug. 26. August is also National Dog Month, Family Fun Month and Happiness Happens Month. There is something to celebrate every day of the year.

Aug. has two full Moons this year. The full Sturgeon Moon is on Tuesday, Aug. 1, and the second full moon in the same month is called a full Blue Moon and will be seen on Wednesday, Aug. 30. This Blue Moon is also the closest supermoon of the year. There will be a Full Moon Sound Bath on Tuesday, Aug. 1 at 5:30 p.m. at the West Kortright Center at 49 West Kortright Church Road in East Meredith. The cost is $30. With each month comes a new full moon which represents a new stage in our own personal journey. The moon has a lot more influence over us than we are aware of, it has been an icon of love and of light conquering darkness. By following the moon and its natural cycles we too can realign ourselves and our connection with the universe. During the session instruments are played with intuition and the nurturing intention to support clearing and to offer a space for self-healing. The power of vibration rebalances the whole system on a physiological level as well as recalibrates the nervous system, bringing a sense of attunement within oneself. Using visualization to open the body to the journey within the fragmented soul, breath becomes the guide, sound becomes the wind, and together they sail to higher realms of consciousness opening the mind, the heart, and the soul. Pre-registration is required and you can find the link to sign up online at westkc.org. The sound bath will be led by Isabelle Berger Delgrange, an 800-hour certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher, a practitioner of Energy Balancing, and a M.E.R Myofascia Energetic Release Bodyworker, and Stephan Martel, a visual artist, and composer. For more information check out the website, www.breathnation.com.

Thanks to these folks and the rest of the committee, Delhi had a family fun time every Friday in July. We listened to great music, ate delicious food, played games, and shopped and supported the vendors. This year, the Fair on the Square celebrates 50 years. If you are interested in supporting the event, please fill out a sponsorship form at forms.gle/qkzCd89AJDhQa4Kn9 and return your sponsorship with a check payable to “Delhi Fair on the Square Committee” to the Fair on the Square Committee c/o Correspondence Secretary at PO Box 85, Delhi, New York, 13753. You can also donate via Venmo at DelhiFair-on-the-Square-Fots. The final Friday of the Fair on the Square is Friday, July 28 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Courthouse Square. The Rotary Club will be there for games for children from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Kids can bring an item for the food bank to get a free game. Starting at 5 p.m., Bobby Curious will perform, then the American Legion will perform the Presentation of Colors at 5:45 p.m., followed by the Delaware County Community Band from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m., and The Irish Stoutmen will perform in the gazebo from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. This last week of the Fair will also feature the Soap Box Derby and a bouncy house. Bushel is pleased to present a screening of two films on Friday, July 28, Wild River, directed by Elia Kazan in 1960; and Beneath Pepacton Waters, shot locally by George Hoag in the mid 1950s and edited by his daughter Alice Jacobson, with Bob Jacobsen, in 1995. This screening, free and open to the public, is curated by writer and Margaretville resident Jennifer Kabat. The doors open at 6:45 p.m. with the screening beginning at 7 p.m. Starring Montgomery Clift and Barbara Loden, Wild River is part melodrama, part land-rights film that looks at property seizures to build the TVA dam. It is also an unvarnished picture of racism in the South, including a nod to James Baldwin, Kazan’s friend, whose writing on race partly inspired the director to make the movie. The film is based on two books: Borden Deal’s Dunbar’s Cove and William Bradford Huie’s Mud on the Stars. Beneath Pepacton Waters recounts stories of both ‘progress’ and loss as it captures the lives of people in Shavertown and the surrounding area just before the dam comes in. This rarely shown film—constructed from Hoag’s films and news footage and narrated by Hoag’s daughter Alice Jacobson—is bucolic, melancholic, and aching. This screening is organized in conjunction with Bushel’s current exhibition, “Waiting In the Deep,” a group show that brings together works on the theme of “water.”
