The Delaware County Chamber of Commerce will host a local contest of the National Civics Bee on Saturday, April 27, as middle schoolers strive to represent New York at the national competition in Washington, D.C. The competition will be held at The Okun Theatre in Farrell Hall at SUNY Delhi, starting at 2 p.m.

The Chamber is partnering with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the Business Council of New York State to encourage civic knowledge and leadership.

The top three finalists from the locally hosted competition advance to the May 30 statewide competition in Albany with one moving on to the third annual national contest in November.

The participating 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students submitted 500-word essays and answered two rounds of civics-based quiz questions during the local competition. At the statewide competition, the advancing students will answer rounds of civics questions. Finalists will also make a pitch of their essay’s topic and solutions and may participate in a group-solve challenge event. The top three finishers will receive a cash prize and trophy.

Local sponsors of the National Civics Bee include Clean Path NY, The Reporter, and the Office for Continuing Education and Workforce Development at SUNY Delhi. The second hour of the program will be carried live on WIOX Radio.
