Students in Zach Whittaker’s DCMO BOCES Conservation course took part in a Soren Erickson’s Game of Logging workshop with guest instructor Bill Lindloff, who visited the Robert W. Harrold campus last week. The students were participating in Game of Logging Level 1, the initial training requirement for obtaining their New York Trained Logger Certification (NYTLC ) from the New York Logger Training organization. They can receive their NYTLC after completing initial training in first aid and CPR, a forest ecology and silviculture course, and the Game of Logging Level 1 chainsaw skills training. To maintain their certification, students will need to complete additional continuing education classes and workshops during the next three years.
Soren Erickson’s Game of Logging is a world-renowned training curriculum that teaches chainsaw skills, and was founded in the 1960s by Swedish logger and instructor Soren Erikson. The curriculum combines Scandinavian logging techniques with the latest systems for working safely around trees, and offers hands-on training in small groups. “Game” refers to both the friendly competitive approach to training and the importance of a strategic plan for felling trees and working safely.
The New York Logger Training organization is a cooperative effort of timber harvesters, foresters, forest industries, forest landowners, government and educators. Headquartered in Rennselaer, they’ve been issuing certifications since 1996.
