David Chalmers Palmer

Mr. Palmer, originally from Bernardsville, graduated from Bernards High, Franklin & Marshall College and the University of Maryland Law School. He then went into practice with his dad, Arthur J. Palmer Jr. until his retirement in 1996.

David proudly served in the New Jersey Army National Guard based in Morristown for 20 years and was active in several military organizations after his discharge.

Mr. Palmer was past president and Paul Harris Fellow in Bernardsville Rotary Club, Director and Treasurer of the Somerset County Bar Association and several college scholarship committees.

David was a lifelong member of the Bernardsville Methodist Church and had served as treasurer on the Board of Trustees. He also served as counsel to Millington Savings, (now Wells Fargo) and Somerset County Board of Elections, as well as the Somerset County Vo-Tech Board of Ed.

Additionally he was a Republican County Committeeman in his district and served as chairman of the Bernardsville Republican Executive Committee for many years. David also owned, managed and operated, with partners, commercial, recreational and residential properties for over 40 years.

Along with his legal, military, church and political pursuits David enjoyed skiing, playing pool, hosting family and friends and his ever-present and beloved dogs.

David had a special place in his heart for his friends and neighbors in Chambers Hollow, Hamden, where he spent his childhood summers on the family farm and later on at “The Schoolhouse” (1833, one room!) which had been in his family for five generations.

Mr. Palmer is survived by his brother Peter S. Palmer, many cousins and extended family and friends.

Memorial service at Bernardsville Methodist Church, at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. Interment to follow at 4:15 at St. Bernards Cemetery, 60 Washington Road, Bernardsville. Friends are then welcome to return to church for light refreshments.
