Barbara May Doubleday, 86, of Bloomville, passed away on Jan. 30, 2025, at her home.
Born on Oct. 27, 1938 in Nashua, New Hampshire, Barbara was the daughter of the late Warren N. and Sigrid (Manty) Doubleday.
She received a bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College in Vermont where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. Barbara then received a master’s degree from the University of Hartford in Connecticut and studied for her doctorate at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas.
Barbara began her career teaching junior high school English in Glastonbury, Connecticut and Buffalo. She moved to the Bloomville area in 1971 and went on to teach 26 years as a professor of English at SUNY Delhi until her retirement as professor emeritus in 1998.
She enjoyed the outdoors, and all that nature had to offer, often spending time at her family cabin in Massachusetts, where she taught her sons how to fish. Barbara enjoyed playing cards, especially skät and bridge. Playing in local card groups was one of her favorite pastimes. She also learned to play trumpet and bugle as a youth, and in her later years liked to collect antiques.
Besides her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her sister, Lois D. Howe.
She is survived by her sons Philip R. and Mark O. Alban, both of Maplewood, New Jersey; sister Sandra D. DeCosta, of N. Adams, Massachusetts; seven grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Bloomville United Methodist Church, 35 Church Street, Bloomville, where a celebration of Barbara’s life will follow at 11 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to American Heart Association or American Cancer Society.
