Audubon Hosts Virtual Talk on Pan-American Bird Conservation

The Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society will host a special virtual program, “Protecting Birds Across Their Whole Migratory Paths – Good News for Linking Habitat Conservation Across the Americas,” on Friday, April 17, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom.

The presentation will feature John Hannan, Bedford Audubon Board President and long-time naturalist, who has collaborated with multiple conservation organizations across North and South America. Hannan will showcase photography of birds and landscapes while highlighting ongoing initiatives to conserve habitats along the full migratory routes of bird species—from nesting grounds in New York to critical stopover and wintering sites across the hemisphere.

By linking local efforts with hemispheric conservation projects, we can protect the same birds that make our local habitats vibrant while supporting sustainable economies and community programs abroad, Hannan said. His work has included projects preserving more than 1.2 million acres in the high Andes and developing community science programs that engage the public directly in bird conservation.

Hannan has an extensive history with the Audubon network, including roles on staff at National Audubon, as Chair of the Audubon NY State Chapters’ Council, and as president of Bedford Audubon’s Board of Directors. He has consulted for ABC, BirdsCaribbean, Manomet, and the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, and until 2024 was affiliated with BirdLife International, the world’s largest bird conservation partnership spanning 119 countries.
