ALBANY – Despite appearing before the state daily with detailed discussions of his actions, Governor Andrew Cuomo did not discuss the fact that he signed an executive order on May 7 extending NYPause through June 6, 2020. The next day he signed an order extending the statewide state of emergency related to the COVID-19 pandemic through June 7.
The extension of the state shutdown was included in an order extending the eviction prohibition for residential and commercial tenants until August and officially closing schools for the rest of the school year. The order was posted on the governor's press website without comment.
According to Will Burns of the governor's press office, "As we announced Monday, starting May 16 regions that hit our benchmarks, which we outlined, will be able to begin reopening in phases. Those who do not meet those requirements will remain under the NYPAUSE order."
According to the plan outlined by Cuomo during his press conference, regions' eligibility will be dependent on meeting conditions relating to hospital preparedness, testing, tracing, and stable or declining rates of infection were met.
