ALBANY – On the second day of a partial state phased-in reopening, Governor Andrew Cuomo said that horse racing and car races at Watkins Glen will be able to open without fans.
“We are fine tuning what things can be opened without crowds and gatherings,” he said in his daily press briefing. “Baseball? You can televise that without fans.”
Cuomo pointed out, however, that one state can't control what baseball does.
“We do control horse racing in the state. Horse racing and races at Watkins Glen can resume June first, with no fans.”
The governor also announced that Westchester and Suffolk County hospitals have been cleared to resume elective surgeries.
“We expect to see an increase in cases,” he said. “What we don't want to see is a spike in cases.”
Each phase of the reopening is being monitored and the numbers are on state websites. If the numbers of COVID-19 cases spike too high or too quickly, the state may rescind some of the opening approvals.
As of Saturday, Delaware County public health officials reported no new cases of the virus.
