Mayes, a visual artist since 1960, is celebrated for her explorations of “seeing” and documentary photography. A Stanford University graduate who studied with renowned artists like Minor White and Richard Diebenkorn, she captured iconic moments such as San Francisco’s “Summer of Love” and the Monterey Pop Festival, later publishing her work in It Happened in Monterey. A 1991 Guggenheim Fellow, her Hawaii photography project, Ki’i No Hawai’i, was showcased at the Honolulu Museum of Art in 2003. Mayes taught at institutions like NYU and Bard College and now resides in the Catskills, where she continues her artistic pursuits as professor emeritus.
