Encourages Others To Netflix and Stitch

HOBART - Hobart resident Melissa Haacker has been using her quarantine time wisely - she is making masks for those who need them.

Haacker is quarantined in Albany with her family and is also immune compromised. She has been sewing since she was young and said while she’s watching Netflix, she has been putting the talent to use.

“Hospitals haven’t wanted homemade masks, but the health aides up here have nothing,” she said. “There was an article in the Times Union from hospitals that said ‘thanks, but we don’t want masks,’ but here is a list of people who do. So, I’ve been sewing - it’s a way I can actually help.”

Haacker said she has made about 60 masks (as of Friday) and she has been amazed by individuals who have been donating fabric and elastic.

“People have been leaving notes and large donations - it’s been a wonderful experience,” she said. “It’s filled my soul with positivity.”

Haacker, who flips houses for a living, welcomes donations of cotton fabric and elastic (preferably quarter inch).

“These donations are just as important as making the masks,” she said.

To inquire about where to donate, call Haacker at 607-624-2448 or email melissahaacker@gmail.com.

“This has been great for getting me through quarantine,” she said. “Right now, it’s hard not to feel helpless and this is a way I could give back.”
