Enid Hope Covell, 84, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2020, in the early morning hours at Catskill Regional Medical Center after a brief but nice visit with her daughter-in-law Ellen and grandkids Alex and Courtney.
Enid was born April 19, 1936, at Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan to Oscar and Gertrude Bobis.
Enid married Alan Covell who passed in 1986. Early on in their life together, Enid worked for a major dress making company in New York City which is what fueled her passion for the fashion world. When they had their son Jay, Enid’s work life came to a halt and she became a dedicated housewife and stay-at-home mom. After Alan passed, she found herself back at work much later in life, for a personal agency as an administrative assistant in New York City across the street from the Twin Towers. During 9/11, Enid was evacuated from her workplace and ended up on a tugboat that crossed the East River to get her home. She retired to Florida soon after.
Enid lived in Florida until January of 2013 when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren went and brought her back to Walton. At that time her mobility had been severely compromised but, within a year or so she had gained it back and got back into an apartment of her own. Enid was a woman who adored her family, especially her grandbabies. She thrived and off them and was finally able to be a regular part of their big and small moments in life again. She had a kind heart and gentle way about her, but she was also a woman who would tell you exactly what she thought whether you wanted to hear it or not.
Enid loved her crossword puzzles and reading (John Grisham was her favorite). She loved musicians Tony Bennett and Ricky Martin and they made her heart skip a beat! Entenmann’s cookies were her guilty pleasure and she would sneak them even when she was told she probably shouldn’t eat them so often. She enjoyed reminiscing for hours over the phone or in person, stories of her late husband Alan, and her son Jay. Enid adored her brother Howard and looked forward to his trips to Florida and then later to New York to visit her. He always brought fresh city bagels and lox for which she invited everyone to share, then picked on everyone who wouldn’t touch the lox! Family events were the most important to her and she loved to have everyone together for any occasion.
Enid was known as GG (Great Grandma) for the past seven or so years and was a force to be reckoned with. She is so much loved and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her loving brother Howard Bobis; sister-in-law Randi Bobis; nephew Craig Bobis; daughter-in-law Ellen Covell (Jimmy Jackson); grandson Alex Covell (Cari); great-grandsons Shayden and Bryson Covell; granddaughter Courtney Covell (Gabe Williams) and great -grandchildren Landon and Josilynn Covell and Dominic and Mia Williams.
Enid is predeceased by her husband Alan Covell; son Jay Eric Covell and parents Oscar and Gertrude Bobis.
Enid will be laid to rest at Montefiore Cemetery in Springfield Gardens, next to her late husband, Alan.
Services to celebrate Enid’s life will be held at a day and time to be announced.
