Elfriede Casimano, 80, passed away on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at home in Walton surrounded by her family.

Elfriede was born during World War II in Fritzlar, Germany on July 4, 1941, to Elizabeth Giesler and Heinrich Mueller. In April of 1957, at just 15 years old, she left everything that she knew to make a better life for herself and her family. Elfriede was given the opportunity to sail to America. When she arrived here in the states she worked tirelessly to pay back the money for her passage and to help her parents and siblings back in Germany.

In 1962, Elfriede met the man who stole her heart, Salvatore Anthony Casimano. They married on Feb. 27, 1964 in Long Island, and enjoyed a happy loving life together. Salvatore predeceased her on Oct. 31, 1992.

Elfreide was a hardworking woman, a devoted stepmother to three children and later became a mother to a child of her own. Family was most important to her and she always had a way of making you feel at home in her presence. She lived humbly and instilled in her family old fashioned values, which were of the utmost importance to her. She loved to entertain, cook, bake, garden, paint, and had a keen flare for decorating. In 1978, she and her husband built a second home on Hamden Hill in Upstate New York where they spent countless weekends enjoying what they called “God’s Country.” Between 2006 and 2007 Elfriede fought an immensely hard battle with small cell lung cancer and won. She decided at that time to move upstate where she could spend the remainder of her days surrounded by her closest circle. Walton became her home, where she made new friendships and cultivated existing ones. She had some very special friendships with Peggy Roberts, Jennifer Fay, Debbie Zeccardi, Lisa Nunley and Carol Armondo from Walton and Elvira Bressler of Arizona. Anyone who met Elfriede couldn’t help but to fall in love with her. She had an infectious personality and had the ability to make everyone smile.

She is survived by three children and their families: Charles and Cheryl Casimano of North Carolina, Jeanne and Victor Fernandez of Florida, and Lora and DJ Barringer of Walton; grandchildren Anthony Casimano (Siobhan), Joseph Casimano (Diana), Kevin Murray (Darlene), Michele Murray Lanni (David), Lisa Murray Seidler (William), Daneen Murray, Jeni Casimano Hults (Wade), Ashton Thompson, Kiyanna Barringer, Baylee Barringer, and James Anthony Seward III; many great-great-grandchildren; sisters Margaret and Karin; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Germany.

She was predeceased by her parents, her son Richard “Ricky” in 1988, granddaughter Nicole Murray in 2014, and two sisters, Anneliese in 2002, and Gustel in 2013. Friends and family were invited to call Monday, June 20, from 3 -5 p.m. at Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton, where services were held at 5 with Rev. David Mickiewicz, officiating.

Memorial Contributions in Elfriede’s memory may be made to Ronald MacDonald House of CNC, 1100 East Genesee Street, Syracuse, NY 13210 or ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
